Novartis: AmEYEHealthy

The Challenge
In America today, 38 million people suffer from cases of significant vision impairment, most of which could have been prevented with early detection. In 2005, more than 20 consumer, senior, patient and health groups, working in partnership with Novartis Ophthalmics, approached IDI to help launch the “Am Eye Healthy?” campaign; a multifaceted effort to increase knowledge of eye health through education, free vision screenings and local partnerships.

IDI’s Solution
IDI helped to conceive and launch the year-long campaign which was designed to help Americans understand the importance of regular eye exams and vision screenings and the value of early detection, treatment and rehabilitation options in eye care. To kick-off the campaign, members of Congress, including Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and Representative Gene Green (D-TX), were recruited to participate in a historic event on Capitol Hill. In addition, IDI developed the user-friendly web site, www.ameyehealthy.org to make educational materials accessible to more people in more places.

The Results
Since its launch, the campaign has touched hundreds of thousands of Americans. Partnering with organizations such as the NAACP and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), vision screening events featuring eye-health related speakers and educational materials have taken place in eight major U.S. cities, providing over 400 people with free vision screenings, many of whom were referred for further care.

“In eye health, an ounce of prevention truly is worth a pound of cure,” U.S. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton said. “There are more treatment and rehabilitation options now than ever, but early detection is critical. This campaign will help more Americans learn about the importance of making regular eye screenings and exams a key part of their preventative health care.”
